Lee P. Sauer, 54, is a freelance writer, illustrator and handyman. He has written several published books, including “It’s a Duesey,” which tells the story of Auburn, Indiana’s automotive history. As an artist, he specializes in cartoons and caricatures. His most visible local work probably would be the Lonsbury Garage billboard on Wayne Street. His handyman work includes all types of small repair and painting, although he specializes in updating and preserving the historical integrity of older homes. With a financial partner, Sauer renovates repossessed houses for resale.
Sauer is a single father with three daughters; two attend Angola High School, the youngest attends Angola Middle School. All three daughters play in the band and participate in sports.
Sauer moved to Angola in 1993 when assigned by the Evening Star to open a Steuben County bureau. As the bureau’s sole reporter, photographer and editor, Sauer covered both city and county government, including the county council. In addition to his assigned duties, Sauer wrote opinion pieces and drew political cartoons for the newspaper.
Sauer serves as a volunteer for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Cahoots mentoring program. He is a past member of the Kiwanis Club and Steuben Historical Society.
After earning a BS in Education from Concordia University, River Forest, IL, Sauer taught in elementary schools in Torrance, CA, and Fort Wayne, IN. In pursuit of being a serious writer, he subsequently took several adventurous jobs, including storekeeper in Chipewyan Lake, Alberta, Canada; commercial fisherman in Kodiak, AK; and reporter for a newspaper in Wittenberg, WI. During his time in Angola, Sauer served a four-year stint as director of public relations at Tri-State University. During the 2010-2011 school year, he taught art appreciation at Trine University. As part of his freelance work, Sauer gives school programs on recycling, drawing cartoons and Abraham Lincoln.
